The Growing Catastrophe Known as Abenomics Posted: 12 May 2014 05:18 PM PDT | By David Stockman: In a decade or two, nearly 40\% of the Japanese population will be retired; and the single-risk it should never take is to induce a collapse of its currency, and the resulting sharp inflation of its import bill for virtually all its energy and industrial materials. |

STTG Market Recap May 12, 2014 Posted: 12 May 2014 04:02 PM PDT The NASDAQ had its second straight day of outperformance jumping 1.77\% to the S&P 500's 0.97\%. The S&P 500 is now at a closing high and near the all time highs intraday reached April 2nd. A lot of familiar names that have beaten down for nearly 2 months were the leaders Monday. Chinese stocks also did well after China announced some ideas to help increase market access. Other than that there really didn't seem to be any great catalyst for such a move.Original post: STTG Market Rec |

Bulls Speculate Better Growth Ahead Posted: 12 May 2014 03:50 PM PDT You can follow our pithy comments on twitter and become a fan of ETF Digest on facebook. Monday bulls touted several as yet unrealized speculations. First, the U.S. economy is improving (certainly not based on last reported GDP data). Secondly, China will reform markets leading to government support of stock markets. Third, the ECB's Nowotny suggested interest rate cuts alone not enough to combat low inflation (the speculation being QE is now necessary). Fourth, the India election outcome |

Daily Market Commentary: Large Cap Breakouts Posted: 12 May 2014 02:39 PM PDT The week made a bright start with Large Caps breaking resistance. The only disappointment was the light volume; a day like today should have packed far more punch. The risk for bulls is a 'bull trap', but for now the breakout should be honored. The Dow index was the first to break today, setting the tone for other indices to push higher. Like the S&P, watch for a 'bull trap' over the coming days. The Russell 2000 gave day traders something to play with. A decent move took the index above both |

Digging In To The Mess of Fund Flows Posted: 12 May 2014 01:23 PM PDT I normally don't pay much attention to mutual fund flows as they don't have nearly the explanatory power or relevance in what is surely a more complicated and topographically inconsistent "market." Third World America - U.S. Suburbs Become Ghettos Posted: 12 May 2014 12:32 PM PDT Not so long ago, a reasonably-presentable American could live an hour outside of a city and commute in for a government or banking job, thus getting the best of both worlds: city-level wages and a 3,000 square foot house with a big yard for the kids. But then municipal governments ran out of money and started laying off, while banks, traumatized by their 2009 near-death experience, cut back on mortgage and consumer lending and fired the related staff. The only other jobs avai |

SPX Stocks Index Stalls Beneath Its Peak Posted: 12 May 2014 12:28 PM PDT What if SPX does not make a new high? This is my Wave Structure going into the weekend. The Dow made a new high today, but so far the SPX has not. This is indicative of (a defensive) rotation into the Blue Chips out of the momentum stocks. What is interesting is that today is a highly charged Pivot Day. Should we see a turn down today or tomorrow without making a new high in SPX, we may see a setup for an explosive move to the downside. |

How Consumers Rule In a Free Economy Posted: 12 May 2014 12:16 PM PDT One of my favorite economists in the history of economic thought is the great Austrian, Carl Menger (1840-1921). While the mainstream of the economics profession acknowledges Menger’s place due to his contribution to the Marginalist Revolution in the 1870s, it otherwise ignores him because his theoretical framework does not lend itself to policy prescriptions. In an era in which the economics profession largely views itself as a shadow branch of government which is itself charged with mana |

Squawk Showdown: Bitcoin or Gold? We have to ask – are virtual currencies on the path to revolutionizing the global financial system, or are they just a lot of hot air? The truth would have to be somewhere in the middle: changes are c |

Breakthrough in Crude Oil Price Only A Matter Of Time Posted: 12 May 2014 11:57 AM PDT On Friday, crude oil hit an intraday high of $101.18 supported by ongoing concerns over tensions in Ukraine. Despite this improvement, the commodity reversed and lost 0.20\% as weaker-than-expected economic data from China and a stronger dollar weighted on the price. Because of these circumstances, light crude erased earlier gains and temporarily slipped below the psychological barrier of $100 once again. Is it enough to trigger another sizable downswing? |

Ukraine Separatists Ask Putin to Annex Donetsk Following Referendum; Sanctions Hypocrisy Posted: 12 May 2014 11:48 AM PDT Separatists in Donetsk claim a turnout of 74.9\% in a referendum on self-determination with 89.7\% voting in favor of self-rule. Ukraine says turnout was 32\%. I suspect the truth is somewhere in between but that's a pretty wide gap. Even 32\% turnout seems respectable given the circumstances. |
