Last year's model still looking to be remade

The great tragedy of science, said Thomas Huxley, the 19th-century biologist and Darwin defender, was the slaying of a beautiful hypothesis by an ugly fact.

Last autumn and into this year, politicians, pundits, regulators and bankers were unanimous in declaring the end of the old financial world and the beginning of something new. We were to begin rethinking everything from the role of banking to investment theories.
